Museums and Galleries
There is no shortage of exhibition space in and around Oamaru, but among the most important are two that are managed by Culture Waitaki–the Forrester Gallery and the Waitaki Museum. The former, housed in a beautifully restored old bank, offers a constantly changing selection of art exhibitions, often featuring local artists and artists who have captured our region’s magnificence in various artistic media. The latter is a newly restored museum that highlights the fascinating history of the area, from fossils discovered in the region, to Maori artefacts and pieces from the more recent European settlement of the area. In addition to these, there are numerous smaller galleries of art, crafts and other items of interest.
